History

Johnnie lived all of his life in Albemarle County, Virginia, as a farmer and a railroad worker. During the time of WWI he worked as a track man on the Southern Railway, on a Section near Proffit, Virginia. One day his crew was "run up on" by a train. Startled, his crew dropped the hand car and ran. Johnnie was trapped under the hand car, which was missed by inches by the fast-moving engine. He suffered a hip injury as a result, ultimately making him ineligible for induction into the Army for the war. According to Johnnie's own account of the incident, many of the regulars on the track crew were already off to war. His comrades on the crew that day were "green," and he maintained that if the "old boys" had been on the crew he wouldn't have been injured.

Following his injury, Johnnie was offered a job by the Southern Railroad to work in Atlanta, Georgia as a crossing guard, but he chose not to move south. He was active in "Woodmen of the World," and attended school functions for many years. He was a notorious "party animal" during his younger days, until he was eventualy civilized by marriage.
